ARLHO aims to list living history and reenactment groups in the Australia/ New Zealand region (though there are one or two listings for overseas groups portraying Oz/ Nz content), and presently features email, WWW , ICQ, postal and voice contact details. A third party-run calendar for events, feasts and training days is also available - organisations are encouraged to directly link to the page from your group website - it effectively then becomes your scheduler for your members (not that it isn't already) as anyone can add items to it at any time.End benefit of being able to see the combined activities is that everyone gets a better idea of what's happening.
Any comments, ideas, etc always sought, as is info on old and new entries.
How did it start ?
The ARLHO Project started in 1989, in an attempt by Brian Rough and Anthony Cryan to seek out Colonial Living History and Reenactment groups to attend the first recreation
of the Military Encampments that were conducted at Fort Lytton.
Whilst on the trail of these groups, the scope of reenactment "Down Under" soon became apparent, and and a listing of groups depicting many eras soon found its first printing in 1992 then again in 1993 (charge was postage and paper only) - one of these "wouldn't it be nice if...." ideas that actually made it.
In 1995, ARLHO made the Internet its home.
ARLHO Entries
An ARLHO entry will feature general contact details for groups (phone, postal, fax), on all entries a date shown in brackets will indicate the last time that the ARLHO had contact with the group (either directly or indirectly). Should the group have internet facilities, the name will be highlighted and there will also be icons indicating what that may be.
Please note that it is in fact clicking on the icons that will invoke the particular function (globe=WWW, envelope=email, flower=ICQ (online status - Green for online,Red for offline and Grey for indicator disabled - clicking on the flower will also invoke the ICQ pager service), Smiley face = Yahoo groups - not the highlighted title. Internet facilities may or may not be provided by the listed principal contact. It is asked that entries be checked semi- regularly, and should the information as listed be incorrect, please advise.
How is ARLHO compiled ?
Basically by a process that would make Sherlock Holmes green with envy...........
In all seriousness though, it is a combination of groups making themselves known, others indicating the existance of their peers, judicious use of search engines and just keeping a look out for any regional reenacting news.
In the final analysis ARLHO is only as good as the information that the individuals and groups that visit it provide. Whilst the best effort is made to have current facts, it is unfortunate that some abnormal entries may be found due to no advice to the contrary being provided or having been found.
Groupings
Entries in ARLHO are defined by period, grouped by country/ state then alphabetically listed. Where there are subgroups in existance, these are listed under the parent body (an exception are the national organisations that have what amount to independantly run subgroups in each state)
ARLHO On-line submission form

This is a javascipt application that users can send in updates or new group entries.
ARLHO Search Engine
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~adjutant/search.html
ARLHO now has a simple search engine - The page may be selected from any of the ARLHO pages.
One restriction that exists is that it will not list all occurances of the desired criteria from throughout the Site; it will give back the first instance on a page eg if you searched for "QLD" the result would not reflect the total times this actually appears throughout the Site (so on for groups, services etc).
It will however give you the contact details if you are seeking a specific person or group.
Wildcards may be used eg "*".
ICQ / Yahoo Status
A number of people these days are making use of the ICQ and Yahoo suite of products for online chattingetc.
For those of you unaware, ICQ is a communications tool with one of its major abilities being that each user can know when another is online. From there Chat sessions may be started as well as other novelties (just the thing for electronic committee meetings (not just via state but on a National scale), event organising, etc.) This indicator shows online status - Green for online, Red for offline and Grey for indicator disabled. Clicking on the flower will also invoke the ICQ pager service.
ARLHO Events Register
http://www.arlho.net/calendar/arl_cal.php
Public events, feasts, meetings, training days can be listed - ANYONE can add an event; however I maintain, edit, delete, at other times to prevent possible tampering. Organisations are encouraged to directly link to the page from your group website - it effectively then becomes your scheduler for your members (not that it isn't already) as anyone can add items to it at any time.End benefit of being able to see the combined activities is that everyone gets a better idea of what's happening.
